This series is my ode to the Sausalito waterfront, the place I call home. By adding a pinch of local salt to beautifully adorned mannequins, I aim to visually express the magic of the symbiosis of salty and chic that is Sausalito. All images are in-camera double exposures; the mannequins and waterfront scenes are merged by overlaying a previously taken photograph onto a new scene in-camera. It’s like a matchmaking process. I first capture a mannequin in a shop window with an eye to eligibility. The properties of this image – all aspects of light as well as the color of both the subject and negative space – inform what may make for a good match technically. I then take the image for a walk along Sausalito’s waterfront and let it determine what I see until there is a visual click, the potential for a striking pair. I may be able to capture it right there and then, or I go back till I get it just right. The Salty Chic-series is about the joy of a purely visual exploration, loosely based on a concept and joining local voices that call for keeping Sausalito salty.
